A Thousand Splendid Suns, a book that had been sitting on my shelf for far too long. I finally picked it up, buddy reading it with friend and I’m so glad I did. What an utterly devastating and beautiful story.

I won’t give away the premise (it’s hard to, without spoiling it), but Mariam and Laila, the two central characters are the epitome of courage. Two women, worlds apart, brought together under the most tragic of circumstances. Their bond, their pain, and their strength will stay with me for a long time.

This book sheds light on the unimaginable struggles Afghan women endured, (and enduring) especially during the Taliban regime. It made me angry. It made me cry. It made me feel privileged. It’s a haunting reminder that the freedom many of us have, the right to choose, to speak, to live freely is not universal.

There are parts of the world where life is dictated to you. Where even dreaming is dangerous.

And that’s terrifying. 💔

A powerful, moving, must-read. Truly.
