“Free, free, free!” She whispers to herself moments after the news of death of her husband. She imagines a future where she can live for herself.

In The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, a woman named Louise Mallard is gently told that her husband has died in a train accident. As she processes the news alone in her room, her emotions begin to shift in unexpected ways. Within the span of an hour, she moves from grief to a deeper, more personal revelation, one that challenges traditional ideas about love, marriage, and freedom.
This book gave me full on The Yellow Wallpaper Vibes. This short but powerful story explores the idea of freedom, selfhood and oppression in an interesting way.
The ending is deeply ironic. Louise dies just as she tasted freedom. The doctors misread her death as joy, but the reader understands it's devastation at having her freedom taken away again.
This story that is written in 1894 is way ahead of its time, yet stuck in the time. A must read.
